Did this supercede SPS-55?
What if there are hostile targets waiting to strike and sink a vessel in the Suez Canal? or to damage the canal itself to prevent the passage of allied vessels?
Love it. Cheers from WI!
Keith my brother 👊🦅🇺🇲
Thank you for all the info on the Wisconsin, my husband was stationed on the Ship. Keep up the great work. B. Osborne
Born in Norfolk, mom was a manager for Nauticus at one point, and my uncle's got a restaurant in Nauticus ~The Norfolk Grille, make sure to check it out, especially if you like Greek food 😉~yet i've just learned more about Wisconsin than i ever did when i was physically there, I just know the 16in .50cal rifles basically shoot a whole Volkswagen Beetle
How battle ready is the Wisconsin?
Why is the radar operating?
I visited a few years back and it was a fantastic time, paid for the guided tour and it was super.
From the picture it looks like Whisky is INBOARD, not outboard of the Iowa.
Nice to see the battleship New Jersey intro on her sister ship
I am a Wisconsin resident and have visited the Wisconsin around 05 or 06 only thing open on my visit was the main deck. Very cool to me.
When is BB 64 going into dry dock? New Jersey BB 62 is coming out of dry dock Friday, if everything goes well. They work on the hull. Painting it, new anodes installed and installed double plating at the bow. So how is your hull holding up?
Glad this was in my suggested videos while watching the New Jersey updates! Looking forward to more videos. New sub.
Keith Nitka's recital of the storied chain of custody for the battleship Wisconsin is part of the problem I had in scheduling a visit to this ship a couple of years back. Hello, to all my followers who share my interest in naval ships. After completing a deep study of Fletcher DD's and visiting all three ships of that class currently displayed in Baton Rouge, Buffalo and Charlestown, I pursued the Iowa's. BB61, BB62 were completed previously before scheduling the "Whisky's" visit. I made the error of reaching out though Nauticus for a V.I.P. visit. My visits are more in-depth than the typical "volunteer docent lead" events. I make contact in advance of my visits to navel ships to insure adequate time is provided to inspect those areas I'm seeking information. BB64 proved a challenge. I wrongly thought the director of Nauticus oversaw the battleship's operation. After playing phone tag with the Nauticus's director for a month, I arrived with no contact other than a "volunteer" working at the office for my 2-day visit, loaded down with 3 cameras and 2 recording devices. Arriving early before the building open, I collected photos from the parking garage across the street for some great "bow on" shots in the early morning light. When the building opened I asked for the director and informed he was away from the office. After explaining the reason for my visit, a very nice lady came out to greet me and share the director had taken time off for his daughter's wedding. I was directed to purchase a ticket and consider upgrading to a below deck tour. Upon boarding, I joined the "docent of the day" who recited answers to the typical questions one expects, i.e., "how much does the boat weigh", how far do the shells fire, number of crew, etc. I quietly stood at the back looking around for a contact who'd supply the "back story" I seek when inspecting naval ships. Day 1 was a chance to explore, photograph and compare the "Whisky" to the previous ships visited on the Delaware River and California coast. Did I mention that I witnessed 5 retirement ceremonies on the aft deck. It reminded me of that wedding chapel in Las Vegas. You have so many minutes for the event and then move out, someone is behind you. Day 2 was not looking good when I arrived waiting for the daily operation to begin. I purchased another ticket and diverted from the assembling point for the first "tour" of the day. Like a birddog, I began my search for that one person who was more than just a "volunteer" who had knowledge. After an hour of pounding the deck I struck "NAVY GOLD". A retired "navy type" stood alone on the 02 level and looked like he wanted to visit with somebody. It was like all you had to do was hit the "play" button and listen. During his recital I learned no organization really was interested in BB64. It was moved around looking for a home. Nitka's introduction to this video tracks the ships movements from the time it left the PNY mothball fleet to being tied up @ Nauticus. My focus on establishing a contact by way of Nauticus was the incorrect track. Their operation just collects the money for the tickets to visit the ship. The docents who volunteer perform as one would expect for the tourist visiting. The "05" that I cornered seemed happy to break out from the canned presentation and share. The remainder of the day was spent with this retired officer and provided the resource originally sought, it just wasn't the path planned. As Yogi is quoted, "when you come to a folk in the road, take it!" In this case the diversion is named Norfolk.
How are the Submarines Tendered to now that there are onyl 2 Active Submarine Tenders in the fleet?
With tug’s 😅
I wonder if battleship Wisconsin could actually make it through the St Lawrence Seaway and into Lake michigan? I know the shipyards in Wisconsin can handle thousand Footers!! I'd like to see the Wisconsin in Wisconsin sometime in the future?! 👍
It is my understanding that Wisconsin is too large to pass thru the St. Lawrence Seaway.
I like the nod to the Battleship New Jersey video opening. Looking forward to more!
I hope Nauticus aims to keep Ryan's production pace. 64 deserves to have the story documented in such ways!
@@matthewdockter2424 I bet it is a ton of work, but seems really worthwhile to both help support the efforts but also share with people that can’t make it there. Really neat to see how much of this stuff is starting to get out there between Texas, Iowa, New Jersey and now Wisconsin (I’m sure there are more out there).
Great info, but lots of numbers, maybe text as it gets said
Interesting little back story there. The Iowa-class has been my personal favorite class of battleship out there. Seeing them on camera doesn't do anyone justice. You have to see them in person in order to really get a glimpse of the sheer size of these great vessels. Just out of curiosity, with USS New Jersey's time in drydock coming to an end, are there any plans to move Wisconsin to drydock for any form of maintenance?
I came down there once a few years ago and I have to make another trip. Wisconsin is in the best shape ... awesome to walk around.
It was my good fortune to visit Wisconsin twice while she was in Philadelphia, once in 1995 and once in 1996. She was tied up inboard of her sister Iowa and it was so impressive to see two battleships together. I saw Wisconsin again in 2002 at Nauticus. My name should still appear in her deck log book which my friend Senior Chief Frederick J. Pogmore both signed in 1995. On that occasion we also received a tour of CV 67 John F. Kennedy and was able to photograph Iowa and Wisconsin from her flight deck. Just saw the Kennedy again in April 2024 while visiting New Jersey in drydock. Sad to see that Kennedy is going for scrap later this year.
WisKy is looking good! 👍🏻
Are there Battleship Wisconsin displays inside the Nauticus Museum? Or complementary displays for the ship...perhaps some WW2 displays? Those would make some nice videos.
Thx4 the info. I knew the "basics" ...now I know more. ⚓
Now that the USS New Jersey has been dry-docked, what are the plans to dry dock the USS Wisconsin?
I would like to see a collaborative video across all the battleship museum ships detailing the differences in the de-mil process each ship underwent... for instance, Iowa can traverse her turrets, but New Jersey's power and control cables were cut in the de-mil process... what other differences are there?..
She is on my bucket list... Just did the dry dock tour of her Sister a few weekends ago. Didn't have time in the budget to swing south to see her then.. Will be coming back for full tours of both.
The Wisconsin is my last Iowa class to visit. I had to cancel a trip in April 2024 to visit her. USS New Jersey is my home port.
@@dwayne7356 The Black Dragon's new paint looks great... I hope you got a chance to see her on the blocks...
Visited the Wisconsin in September 2003 with my dad. Definitely want to come back to it and take a tour since we ciuldnt go inside her then. My dad passed five years ago and would love to revisit. ❤
Thank you for the video. Do you have any plans to drydock Wisconsin for bottom cleaning and painting such as New Jersey in the near future ? Looks like her Boot topping could use a new coat of paint.
To those who haven't been the Wisconsin is a must see while in Norfolk.
Beautiful ship <3
The good ole Dungaree Navy, that was my Navy! 1986-2007!
I met Keith last week, aboard the Wisconsin. He did an excellent job giving us the tour. We got to relive his experience as a helmsman. It was a great experience. I would recommend it to everyone..
Met him, and the ship, in person. It was a great experience. Glad to watch these awesome interviews...
I was part of a team in the 80's, who installed, rang out, and Audited ABL on the Iowa at Norfolk Naval Shipyard... Fire Control Tech'
Guys we all know the answer to this question, YES!!!!!
Just jumping in about the yield of Littleboy (Hiroshima), it was 15kt and Fatman (Nagasaki) was 20kt. Awesome video.
As a former Army Public Affairs photo journalist (And Video)📷🎥, I can neither confirm or deny that I've ever answered a question regarding nuclear weapons. 😉
Did the Tomahawk have to use all 10 way points on the way to the target EVERY time? Could you only program 7 waypoints?
GREAT info Keith! Can't wait for the vid on Harpoons. 🚀🚀🚀🚀⚓⚓
Don't care. Its an EX warshp. How many beans and bullets it carried isn't really as informational as what new USN ships are capable of
Sailors back then were far different than what we have today...And' its former battleship, and EX's are reserved for wife's.
Just took this tour, and stood where he is standing. Outstanding crew, and presentation. Keith was our tour guide and did an excellent job...
Im pretty sure Wisconsin is not carrying any TLAMs at this time.
Why is uss Wisconsin way above the wind water line. It almost looks like she is being dry docked
All the Iowas are at light condition as museum ships.
Around 13:55 it loses sound.
Were the armored box launchers set in a fixed position? Meaning would the ship have to be oriented in the correct direction before firing the missiles?
Tomahawk cruise missiles are designed to fly at extremely low altitudes at high subsonic speeds and are piloted over an evasive route by several mission-tailored guidance systems. They can be fired and find their target no matter the ship's orientation.
Yes and no, while the ABLs themselves are in a fixed position, once launched, the tomahawks can change course once airborne hit their target.
Thank you! Excellent video!
Nice Deck tour...I wonder how much has changed in 8 years? 🤔
